Abstract

Pecel Lele Lamongan banners represent a distinctive vernacular visual culture developed organically in Indonesian public spaces, marked by manual hand-painted typography, high-contrast colors, decorative illustrations, and consistent composition. Prior studies remain limited to formalistic visual analysis rather than structured archiving, while the growing use of digital printing threatens the continuity of this manual tradition. This study designs a visual archive book documenting the visual characteristics of these banners as a structured reference for design practitioners, students, and researchers. A qualitative visual-research approach was used, involving field documentation of 78 curated banners in Lamongan Regency and interviews with two traditional banner makers and a visual archiving practitioner. Findings were organized into four thematic sections (typography, color, illustration, and layout), supported by an indexing system and a custom display typeface extracted from the banners' letterforms, with 22 banners further reinterpreted while retaining their vernacular essence.
