Abstract

This research examines the visual construction of fear in the classic Indonesian horror comic, Kismis: Kisah Misteri – Kuntilanak Haus Darah. The study aims to identify the visual elements that build horror, analyze their connection to cultural mysticism, and evaluate the relevance of classic comic techniques in the digital era. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, the analysis reveals that terror is constructed through extreme anatomical distortions, such as predatory claws and distorted faces, which transform the human figure into an "abject" entity. Furthermore, the use of heavy black shading and coarse manual hatching ef ectively creates a "raw" and haunting atmosphere. A key finding shows that technical limitations, such as the use of low-quality newsprint, actually enhanced the sense of "filth" associated with the Kuntilanak myth. This study concludes that these classic visual techniques are not obsolete; rather, their core principles of high-contrast shading and raw anatomical distortion continue to serve as a vital aesthetic foundation, successfully adapted by contemporary digital and modern print creators to maintain psychological dread in the modern era.
