Abstract

Introducing history and cultural heritage to children from an early age is essential to fostering pride and awareness of local history. However, history learning in elementary schools is often perceived as boring due to text-heavy delivery methods. This study aims to design an interactive children's illustration book about Sambisari Temple in Yogyakarta for children aged 7–9 years. The design methodology utilizes the Design Thinking approach, encompassing Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test stages. Data were collected through interviews, a pre-design questionnaire targeting 45 students, and prototype testing (user test) with 30 students. The final design features an interactive illustration book with pop-ups, lift-the-flap elements, and a 16-piece puzzle tailored to children's cognitive and motor development. In addition to serving as an interactive learning medium for children, the book functions as a guidebook for parents to actively and communicatively facilitate and explain historical facts to their children. Test results indicate that this interactive book design serves as an engaging supporting medium for introducing the history of Sambisari Temple to children through shared reading activities.
