Abstract
The development of men's hairstyle trends from 1990 to 2025 reflects changes influenced by popular culture, fashion, music, film, the growth of the barbershop industry, and digital media. Although information regarding men's hairstyles is widely available through social media and online platforms, it remains fragmented and lacks systematic visual documentation that presents the evolution of hairstyle trends across dif erent eras. This condition makes it dif icult for the public, barbers, hairstylists, and visual communication practitioners to obtain comprehensive visual references within a single medium. Therefore, this study aims to design a visual book entitled Men's Hairstyle Trends from 1990–2025 in Yogyakarta as a medium for documentation, education, and visual reference. This design employed a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review, observation, interviews, and visual documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning (STP) method to formulate communication strategies and determine the visual concept, editorial layout, typography, photography, color scheme, and supporting media. The final design is presented as a visual book adopting the concept of Visual Timeline of Men's Hairstyle Evolution, featuring nineteen representative hairstyles categorized into four chronological periods: the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. Each hairstyle is presented through photography, historical background, visual characteristics, and supporting information arranged using a modern editorial design approach. The resulting visual book is expected to function as a documentation archive, educational medium, and comprehensive visual reference that contributes to preserving the visual development of men's hairstyle trends while supporting the dissemination of design knowledge within the field of Visual Communication Design.
