Abstract

Folklore is a form of cultural heritage that functions as an educational, reflective, and collective expression of society. One example that survives through oral tradition is the tale of Miyangga, a supernatural entity believed to haunt the Cijalu River in Cilacap. However, the rise of popular culture and the lack of visual documentation have made such stories increasingly unfamiliar to the younger generation. This study presents the design of an illustrated horror book titled Miyangga as a visual communication medium aimed at reintroducing local folklore while promoting environmental awareness. The visual approach adopts a traditional Javanese painting style, fused with digital techniques, featuring flat colors, bold outlines, and symbolic composition. Targeting readers aged 13–18, this book is intended to serve as a communicative, relevant, and contextual tool for cultural and ecological literacy. Keywords: folklore, Miyangga, horror illustration, cultural preservation, visual communication
