Abstract
Posters are one of the most popular media in communicative visual design; posters themselves are used as the main medium for many movements. However, posters themselves are only a form of media; the messages inside of those posters are the center of attention. Other than used for commercial advertisement, posters are also used for public services. Those public service posters are used to change the public behavior through messages sent by the designer of those very posters. This research is done to identify and analyse the uniqueness of the culture reflected behind the Indonesian horror posters. As one of their main forms of promotional media, movie posters take a large part in attracting the attention of the audience as well as conveying the nuances and the themes of the movie. In the context of Indonesian horror movies, these posters not only show the elements of horror, but also show the local cultural aspect that includes symbols, colours, and visual styles. This research uses a qualitative approach along with the visual analysis method to study several Indonesian horror movie posters that are chosen and released in the last few years. The research findings show that the cultural elements including deep colours, the appearance of classical Indonesian mythical entities, along as backgrounds that become special features that differentiate Indonesian horror movies posters from others. With this, Indonesian movie posters not only work as a media for promotion, but also as a representation of their cultural values and strong local beliefs. This research hopes that through the contribution of this research on the visual design and the culture of these posters, it can be used as a reference in understanding the dynamic representation of culture in Indonesian creative industry. Keywords: Horor, Poster, Semiotika
