Abstract

The design of the illustrated book “Mengenal Lebih Dekat Bregada Kraton Yogyakarta” aims to serve as an educational media to introduce the cultural values of Bregada Kraton to teenagers aged 13–15. This project was initiated in response to the lack of engaging and visually communicative media that can attract young audiences to local culture, particularly the traditional palace troops known as bregada. In the current era of globalization, teenager’s interest in local traditions tends to decline due to the dominance of foreign cultural influences and the limited availability of accessible visual content. The design process applied a qualitative descriptive method using a visual communication design approach. Data collection was conducted through literature review, direct interviews with bregada members, and visual observation of their attributes, clothing, and ceremonial activities. The book was developed digitally with a semi-realistic illustration style, flat color technique, and a layout system that prioritizes readability and visual clarity. The content features ten selected bregada units, each presented with character illustrations and brief narratives, followed by depictions of training routines and their roles in royal ceremonies. With a communicative visual approach and structured content flow, this book is expected to provide a fun and approachable way for younger audiences to learn about the royal traditions of Yogyakarta. Moreover, this project serves as a contribution to cultural preservation through visual communication design.
