Abstract

This study aims to analyze the photographic composition on the cover of Majalah Mata (Mata Magazine) online editions 1 to 10, focusing on the application of visual principles such as the rule of thirds, angle of view, and spatial elements. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through visual observation of cover data obtained from the website fotogarferindonesia.com. The findings indicate that most magazine covers apply composition techniques consistently from both technical and aesthetic perspectives. However, not all covers effectively convey the editorial message. Some editions reveal a disconnect between the cover image and the magazine's content, suggesting that the narrative function of photography is not fully optimized. These results highlight that photographic composition is not merely a visual arrangement tool but also a form of visual communication that should enhance the reader's understanding of the publication’s content. This study contributes to the development of visual literacy, particularly in the fields of visual communication design and editorial photography.
