Abstract

This study aims to analyze the lighting techniques used in the yearbook photography of SMA 18 Surabaya in 2024 and compare them to those used in the 2025 edition. The main focus of the research lies in identifying the types of lighting applied, the direction of light, and their impact on visual aesthetics and message delivery. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation of eight class concept photos—four from each yearbook. The findings indicate that both editions utilize the Strobist lighting technique, but with differing approaches. The 2024 yearbook emphasizes lighting variation through a combination of natural and artificial light, as well as the use of rim light to enhance visual depth. In contrast, the 2025 yearbook prioritizes even lighting using dual main lights, though the execution was sometimes inconsistent, resulting in flatter images. These differences in lighting strategy significantly affect the visual quality and narrative communication of the photographs. This study is expected to serve as a reference for photographers, yearbook production teams, and educational institutions in designing more effective and visually communicative lighting in photography.
