Abstract
The tradition of merantau (migrating to seek knowledge or experience) is a deeply rooted aspect of Minangkabau (West Sumatra) culture, carrying values such as independence, courage, and personal growth. Introducing these values to younger generations, especially high school students, requires engaging and relatable media. This study focuses on designing a comic that presents the life of a young migrant as an educational tool for high school readers. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with Minangkabau migrants in in Yogyakarta, community leaders, and cultural organizations. The findings informed the development of the comic's narrative and visual style to ensure authenticity and relevance. The creative process included story development, storyboard creation, sketching, line art, and digital coloring using a cartoon inspired illustration style appealing to teenagers. The final product, a comic titled Taragak Kampuang, highlights themes of cultural identity, adaptation, and determination. This comic aims to serve as an educational and inspiring medium that introduces students to the cultural richness of the anak rantau (migrant youth) experience in a format that is accessible, engaging, and meaningful.
