Abstract

Folktales are an inseparable part of Indonesia's national identity and cultural diversity. However, many of these traditional stories are gradually being forgotten over time due to the growing influence of modern entertainment and changing reading habits. This condition highlights the need for creative media solutions to preserve this valuable cultural heritage and ensure that it remains relevant to future generations. This project aims to design a Webtoon-based digital comic adapted from the Central Kalimantan folktale “Asal Mula Pulau Nusa” to preserve Indonesia's diverse cultural heritage through a fresh and engaging approach. The selection of the Webtoon platform is a strategic decision, as it provides an effective medium for educating younger generations while promoting Indonesian cultural identity in today's digital era A qualitative method was employed for gathering and interpreting data to achieve the research objectives. The comic's visual and narrative evolution was directed by the Design Thinking method, which prioritizes comprehending users' requirements through empathy, problem identification, and the design of solutions that address those needs effectively. By combining engaging visuals with stories that resonate with readers, the digital comic is intended to provide both educational and entertainment value. The Webtoon format offers easy accessibility and a comfortable reading experience, making it suitable for a wide audience. By targeting young people who are familiar with digital technology, this approach encourages them to explore, appreciate, and actively participate in preserving Indonesia's rich cultural heritage in a contemporary and engaging way.
