Abstract

As a maritime nation, Indonesia is home to numerous endemic marine species, including the Halmahera Walking Shark (Hemiscyllium halmahera), which remains relatively unknown to the general public. This final project explores the design of an art toy kit themed around this unique species, utilizing 3D printing technology as an alternative educational medium. The project adopts a Design Thinking approach to address the low conservation literacy among youth, particularly in relation to lesser-known marine fauna. The research process follows five stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Visual trends, user preferences, and behavioral characteristics of Generation Z were examined to develop a character named "Halmo," inspired by the walking shark's morphology and natural movement. The kit includes the main 3D-printed figure, interactive packaging, a foldable educational leaflet (FoldFact), and collectible stickers, designed to combine emotional engagement with informative content. Through stylized character design and urban visual language, this project aims to raise awareness of marine biodiversity in a playful yet impactful way. The result demonstrates that combining visual storytelling with tactile design can be an effective strategy to promote marine conservation, especially among younger audiences.
